Property in Claremont
Less than 20 minutes from Cape Town's CBD and V&A Waterfront, the Constantia winelands and numerous golf courses, and with Newlands Cricket Ground and Rugby Stadium, as well as top schools such as Bishops, Herschel, Rondebosch, SACS and Westerford - along with the University of Cape Town - right on its doorstep, it's not surprising that Claremont property has been a popular choice for decades.
HISTORY
From the mid 17th century until the mid 19th century, the area now known as Claremont was primarily agricultural. The modern history of Claremont begins around the 1850s, when the village began to grow as the British began building country homes on land that had formed part of some of the original Dutch farms established soon after Jan van Riebeeck landed at the Cape. By 1886, Claremont was declared a municipality. A power station was erected in the 1890s and an electrical tramway service introduced in 1897. A boom in property development followed during the early years of the 20th century, and in 1913 Claremont was incorporated into the City of Cape Town.
CLAREMONT TODAY
Today, though Claremont is part of Cape Town, it is virtually a city in its own right, with a busy CBD complete with busy shopping centres - most notably Cavendish Square and the adjacent Cavendish Connect - banks, restaurants, cinemas and high-rise office buildings surrounded by ‘suburbs' of its stretching from below the railway line to the lower slopes of Table Mountain. The CBD is undergoing extensive redevelopment which includes a burst of new commercial and residential property development, the conversion of several older office buildings to residential use, the opening of a new public transport terminal as well as the transformation of Claremont's busy Main Road. There is no doubt that this veritable renaissance of central Claremont will add to the value of properties throughout the suburb.

HISTORY
The recorded history of the area between Table Mountain and the Liesbeek River, including Newlands, begins in the mid 17th century, just a few years after Jan van Riebeeck established the first permanent settlement at the Cape to supply the ships of the Dutch East India Company. Land along the river was granted to a number of the first Dutch settlers who established farms to supply produce to the VOC. A few short years later, South Africa's first brewery was established along the banks of the river. Today beer is still closely linked with the area; the SAB brewery is one of Newlands's most recognised sights, and can easily be seen from the grounds of another Newlands landmark, Sahara Park Newlands Cricket Ground.
Sports lovers will also know Newlands as the home of one of the world's best-loved rugby stadiums. Newlands, the second-oldest test venue in the world, is today a modern stadium which is home to Western Province Rugby and the Cape Stormers.
The suburb was given its name by Cape governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel, who was granted land 9 km south of Cape Town. He named it De Nieuweland, or Nieuwland, and built a residence here. Van der Stel was also responsible for the planting of many of the oaks in the Newlands area. The gracious Vineyard Hotel, once the country home of Lady Anne Barnard, and the Josephine Mill, both of which stand on the banks of the Liesbeek River, are just two of the numerous historic buildings that dot the suburb. By the middle of the 19th century Newlands was considered one of the most desirable residential areas of Cape Town - a fact that has not changed over the past 150 years.
